Carrot Cake

November 30, 2006 Blurbs Comments

On Monday, I had a sudden craving for carrot cake, the one from Coffee Bean, which does more artery clogging damage than its local fried counterpart. With almost 1000 calories packed in a slice, it is too hard to beat.

The two coffee bean outlets near my work place didn’t carry the cakes in the past three days I’ve asked (starting from Mon). By Tuesday, I couldn’t wait any longer so I tried to compromise myself with one from somewhere else. I visited the three Starbucks in the vicinity searching for that ever elusive carrot cake. No signs of it. One of the more informed Starbucks staff told me they will not be offering the cakes anytime soon because of the Christmas season (what!?). I mumbled a quiet thanks. Inwardly, it sounded more like “Are you kidding me!? Could there really be a God? Is he punishing the Deist?”

NYDC offers Orange Carrot Cake and Dome has Pineapple Carrot Cake, which are understandably completely different. In fact, by offering all sorts of variations besides the one I want, they are taunting me.

Anyway, a fresh cake finally arrived at the nearby Coffee Bean outlet today. I had one, no more restless sleep.

By the way, my schoolmates from NTU are all foodie. I sometimes have lunch with those working around the area. The next lunch venue is at Menotti. Italian food. Yum O, my favourite!

I’m quite amused by people who abuses motivational quotes, putting them in email signatures, msn status, blogs. Because the world cares about their mantra for life.

“Alertness and courage are life’s shield.”
“Goals are dreams with deadlines.”
“Strong lives are motivated by dynamic purposes.”

And the most cringe worthy one of all…
“Dance like Nobody’s Watching”

What? If nobody’s watching me dance, I will be pissed off.

But seriously, if you need one of those cliche quotes to help you live, something is wrong with you.

Inspirational quotes, I can tolerate. In fact, there is one quote everyone should swear by. “Priscilla is the Queen of Everything (yes, including the desert), give her gadgets!”. Wow, this is good, it needs to be marqueed as your screen saver right now! Do it!

There is however, a string of words that never fails to make me wanna punch the person who asks in the face.

“Today never go out ar?”

Argh…my blood boils. What is so wrong with staying at home that whenever I logged into messenger on a nice sleepy Saturday afternoon, someone is bound to ask me that question? This usually warrants a click of the close button and I’ll continue doing whatever I plan on doing. But when the sentence is accompanied by a huge blinking question mark that can bounce and do backflips, I’ll start foaming in the mouth, which could be rather distracting I hope you understand.

For your information, Mr animated question mark, my home rocks. It is beyond awesome. Absolutely nothing else beats staying at home. If you need to get out to enjoy or relax, it means it is Time to Move. Stop assuming everyone is as miserable as you are at home. Your home stinks, mine does not.

Ipod Shuffle

November 27, 2006 Nerdette Comments

I saw the shuffle. An honest looking boy told me weeks before to reserve one because I probably won’t get any from the first two shipments due to high demand. I went back last Friday and asked the same guy if they have any stock. He said “Yes Madam! Would you like to get one for yourself?” Firstly, Liar. Secondly, I do not respond kindly to Madam. You should only address me by Miss or Babe. Choose the latter if unsure. Thirdly, it didn’t look as tiny as I thought it would be. But anyway, until I get my pay, I’m gonna refrain from buying anything I do not need.

Speaking about needs, I need a sidekick. It is the most deliciously crafted piece of electronic for now. Do you reckoned it’ll ever be made available in Singapore? I doubt so but wouldn’t I love to get my hands on one.

Nintendo MP3 Player

Goody. I’m tired of ipods. People accessorise their ipods with smug faces. Is that really necessary? Cool things always ended up getting ruined by stupid people.

Recently, my friend wanted to give me a 3rd generation ipod. I didn’t take it but damn, isn’t the 3rd gen the prettiest ipod of them all? I’m gonna check out the new shuffle later, though I’m most probably not getting it. I don’t understand why they have to remove the plug and play feature in favor of a smaller size. Doubling it as a thumb drive was pretty smart, shrinking it is just unoriginal and predictable. Snore. I think Apple wouldn’t give up until they create a player so tiny, the ear plugs make up most of its mass. Actually it wouldn’t be such a bad idea if not for the fact that I’ve already beaten them to it and invented something even smaller. It’s call music in my head, and it plays Britney on repeat.

Christmas is Here

November 18, 2006 Joy Comments

Or at least, the Christmas Treats are here. Man, they are mighty fine.

VS 2006

Seems like my Goddess Adrianna Lima has gained a little bit of weight. She’s so cute!

In other news, mybloglog is to be acquired by Yahoo. What! It just came out of beta! Hah, The Internet seem to be heading in the direction of media conglomeration.

I always thought people turn to The Internet to escape the traditional media scene which is dominated by too few multinationals. In a recent web standard conference, more seats are taken up by corporate representatives (as compared to previous years), independent web developers (people who started it) were ousted away. I would give you a reference link but I forgot to bookmark my feed.

Ah well, nuff surfing, gotta hit the books. I haven’t been doing this. Oh the shame.

Riding the High Wave

November 17, 2006 Joy Comments

Have been high on life that I was starting to get a bit jaded. Which is why it’s kinda hard imagining paradise or perpetual bliss that some religions talk about but anyhoo…there has been a lot of changes going on… good changes.

For example, being in back in school and learning, working, my family moving, meeting passionate and inspirational people, a hip hop gig coming up. And then there’s Bunniee. Hah ok never mind, you don’t need to know.

And yes, Britney’s back, sporting a very cute bob too. My hair’s at that annoying length of not here nor there where it’s neither long nor short. The length where your hair escapes the nook of your neck, creeps off your shoulders and grows out into something that defies all laws of gravity. But I must resist the urge to cut it into a bob again cuz it’ll be a ceaseless cycle. I’m not spending what’s left of my youth with a bob. Snore.

Anyway, one lady working in my company has Dr. Something on her name plate. Damn, I want one too. Dr Priscilla Liu, no Ms/Mrs/Mdm hints. Gosh, how enigmatic is that! Is Dr Liu young? Is Dr Liu married? Can Dr Liu be a guy? Is Dr Liu a crappy old fart? One can only wistfully dream, to do a PHD, school is advicing us to do a thesis instead of a critical inquiry project which I was planning to do. Then you’ll have to be good enough to be selected, by the time I’ve gain enough smarts to get a PHD, I’ll be a crappy old fart.

PS: I’m working again because my course is not as murderous as I thought it would be. Besides, some of the positive changes require me to save up more moolah. Yea I know I’m being super coy but hey, the Internet is dangerous.

PPS: My old NPCC mate got into Project Superstar. Liu Ruo Wen, support yea?

Vox.com and stuff

November 14, 2006 Nerdette Comments

I’ve checked back with vox after it has officially opened its doors to public. Hey I must say, sixapart is doing a pretty sweet job with vox. Love all the web 2.0 styled templates. Having a personal blog is pretty much dousing yourself with narcissism so why not have a design that screams your presence too. I think vox has won blogger in terms of blog templates. Sure, blogger has famous web designers contributing to its templates collection but the huge number users with few choices ends up with designs that has became ubiquitous, even utilized by spam blogs. Plus, they are a bit out of style already. Too 1990s.

Anyway, starlaced sunkissed has became the top google search result. Super boh liao cheap thrill.

In fact, starlaced rendered joy.nu as top result too.

Come to think of it, this happened because starlaced is not even a word and doesn’t exist before. What is starlaced anyway? I dunno, I made that up.

Ah whatever, I’ve got more important things to say. Things like…

The Spirit of Giving
Worldvision Christmas Gifts!!!

Worldvision is an organization working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty. Help spread a little joy and send gifts to the needy children this Christmas (you don’t need that LV bag, you really don’t!). Contact World Vision Singapore at 6221 1040 or singapore@worldvision.org.sg and ask for their Christmas Gift Catalogue 2006 which comes with a list of items and children/communities you can choose to support.

Work and School

November 9, 2006 Work/School Comments

Graphic: The pretty little girl on the left is a Fafinette by Fafi, a graffiti artist I’m pretty obsessed with. If you’ve reading this for a long enough, you’ll know. I’ve cleanly forgot to put up a disclaimer. Whoops. Personally, I do not know how to draw. I know how to draw a really straight line though, with a ruler. Go me!

Currently facing the end of my semester now, with exams looming up before me. Overall, school has been wonderful. NTU actually teaches people skills besides “How to develop self endorsed theories and make people believe in them”, something the Arts students are specializing in. My schoolmates are really lovely people too.

I am supposed to help conduct a training workshop in Shanghai, sounds like a career suicide to me but schoolmates think that it’ll be a piece of cake, because you know Mandarin? It’s like ABC, only slightly simpler.

Tell me then. What do you call “input fields” in Mandarin? How about “radio buttons”? Or even folders, url, login, scroll page? Not so smarmy now are you?

Well it’s quite simple really, everything can be lumped into a “这个”(this) and “那个”(that). Example, “你们 click 这个, then click 那个, then click 这个 and 这个. 很简单!”

I just need someone to tell me what’s “click” in mandarin and I’m good to go.

Update

November 5, 2006 General Comments

Sorry for the lack of updates I’ve been far too busy that I didn’t realise the last update was about a week ago. Busy is an understatement. I have been missing Oprah. Both meanings apply, that is, I haven’t been watching the show and my heart aches for Oprah. That is how busy I am, can’t-watch-Oprah busy. You have busy, very busy, super busy, mad busy and right at the end of the spectrum, the can’t-watch-oprah busy.

This week, I also made my first African friend. Hey! That’s a big deal because I didn’t have any friends from Africa waat. She was a bit intimidating at first. There are so much gangsta getto yo mama stuff going on in television that it wasn’t hard for me to believe that she might have a gun in her bag and would smash my head in with it if I did so much as mouth a wrong word. Turns out that she couldn’t have been any sweeter. :D

Anyway, This is the best Halloween costume I’ve seen. lmao.

Saw this article from my reader too.

There will be virtually nothing left to fish from the seas by the middle of the century if current trends continue, according to a major scientific study.
